Skoda: Skoda Karoq 2022: more current in design, technology and aerodynamics

ANDoctober n 2017 I was introduced to non-sports automobile information, known as product information, during a presentation by Skoda. The Czech brand invited me (as a representative of the magazine ENGINE BRANDnow extinct) dynamic presentation of Karoqthe second model in its SUV range after the Kodiak. For two days I had the opportunity to test the Czech SUV on the roads of Sicilyin southern Italy.

2022 Skoda Karoq review

More than four years later, I was again invited by Skoda, this time on behalf of BRAND CARS (the engine portal of MARK), to attend the dynamic presentation of the new skoda karoqwhich has been updated with essential changes run and give a new impetus to the model before giving way to the second generation (if any). This is called a ‘face lift’ Where ‘restyling’ (redesign in Spanish). The setting chosen this time is the Portuguese town of Viana do Castelo75 kilometers north of Harbor and very close to the border with Galicia.

agile and dynamic for an SUV

In these almost five years since my motor “baptism”, I have tried dozens of different models and I learned a bit more about cars (not much), but my opinion on the Skoda Karoq remains the same: it’s a good SUV, agile and dynamic for an SUV, easy to drive, really comfortable, very spacious inside, quite practical day by day and with the right dose of character and emotion. Now, in addition, it has a more striking appearance, more elaborate aerodynamics, better equipment and a more modern and ecological interior.

most striking aspect

The first thing that catches the eye of the new Skoda Karoq is the grille, now wider and more hexagonal, as well as the front and rear lights with LED technology, more stylized and sharper than in its previous version. The daytime running lights are now split in two and for the first time the Karoq can be optionally fitted with Full LED matrix headlightsone of the main novelties of the model.

more aerodynamic

Another of the most important novelties is that aerodynamics have been improved by more than 9%which means that now the SUV has a drag coefficient (cd) of 0.30 and this allowed reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions equal engine. This improvement was possible, among other things, thanks to the new aerodynamically optimized alloy wheels (from 17 to 19 inches), the longer rear spoiler, the side fenders on the rear window and the covered underbody.

Recycled and sustainable materials

As for the interior, the novelties are mainly two in number: new recycled and sustainable materials (e.g. seat covers are partially made from recycled PET bottles) and advanced technologies to increase comfortsuch as improved LED ambient lighting and the option of power adjustment and memory function for the front passenger seat.

Two diesel and three petrol engines

Regarding the mechanical range, the new Skoda Karoq offers a selection of five engines (two diesel and three gasoline) of the latest EVO generation of Volkswagen Groupthat offer power that goes from 110 hp from TSI access version 1.0 up to 190 hp exclusively reserved for the Sportline version, the sportiest and best equipped with all-wheel drive as standard. For him TDI 2.0which has a power of 150 hp4×4 driving is optional.

Skoda Karoq price

The Karoq is available in trim levels Active, Ambition and Stylein addition to the variant sports lineand has a starting price of €28,200 (22,280 with campaigns and brand financing offer). The top-end version is the 190bhp 2.0 TSI with seven-speed DSG automatic gearbox, 4×4 transmission and Sporline trim level (€43,900 without discount), which was the most requested model by the colleagues of the specialized press for obvious reasons.

Sportline: the sportiest and most equipped version

We are committed to testing TDI versions, starting with the version 2.0 TDI 150 hp with seven-speed DSG automatic transmission and 4×4 transmission with Sportline trim, available from 43,000 euros (37,080 all discounts combined) and seems to us to be the perfect alliance between sportsmanship and efficiency. If it does not reach the 190 CV of the 2.0 TSI Sportline, it has nothing to envy thanks, in particular, to a generous maximum torque of 360 Nm (the gasoline version remains in 320Nm), so you have a strongest response and less linear.

As you can imagine, the power delivery is almost immediate and fun starts from very low revolutions. If we add to this the dynamic chassis control (CDC) and the progressive sense (available as an option), we can make the Karoq behave like a real sports SUV, even if it isn’t. The basic parameters (Eco, Comfort, Normal and Sport) can be chosen in the drive mode selection, while in the single mode can be fine tuned.

The new Karoq measures 4390mm long and 1841mm wide. Front-wheel-drive models have ground clearance of 1603mm and a wheelbase of 2638mmwhile the all-wheel-drive Karoqs are slightly taller (1,608mm) and have a shorter wheelbase (2,630mm), although the differences are virtually negligible.

spacious trunk

When the vehicle is fitted with the seats included as standard, the trunk has a capacity of 521 literswho goes to 1,630 liters if the rear seats are folded down. With the VarioFlex seatsavailable as an option, the trunk has a capacity of 588 literswho goes to 1,605 liters with the seats folded down, and 1,810 liters if the rear seats are removed (they can be completely removed easily and quickly).

The Skoda Karoq in Spain

Overall, the Skoda Karoq was the brand’s best-selling SUV in 2020 and the second model with more deliveries after the octavia. In Spain it is also one of the most popular Skoda models, although in 2021 it has been overtaken by the Kamiq (smaller) and in 2022 they also advanced it, for now the fabienne and Octavia. The redesign will serve to boost sales of the model worldwide, also in Spain, where it competes directly with models such as the Ateca headquartersthe Peugeot 3008the volkswagen tiguanthe Kia Sportage and the nissan qashqaiamong others.
